• The cell body is associated with the production of proteins and neurotransmitters
• Dendrites are extensions of the cell body that carries nerve impulses towards it
• Axons are single long fibres that carry nerve impulses away from the cell body
• Schwann cells surround axons, protecting it and providing it with electrical insulation
• Myelin sheath forms a covering to the axon
• Nodes of Ranvier are constrictions between adjacent Schwann cells where there is no myelin sheath
