diodes

    Cards (7)

    • what are diodes?

a component made from semi-conducting material
a component that only conducts one way
naturally it has a high resistance
applying a PD across it can reduce its resistance
    • method for investigating diodes

      set up circuit
      vary voltmeter reading
      measure current
    • how does potential difference effect diodes

energy from potential difference frees up electrons in semi-conductor, so its conductivity improves.
    • diodes don't conduct backwards
    • what is a diode?

a non ohmic conductor that has a much higher resistance in one direction (its reverse)n than in the other direction (its forward)
    • how can we interpret a diode on a graph?

in the forward facing direction of the diode, the line curves towards the y-axis. so the current is not directly proportional to the potential difference. the resistance changes as the current changes. a diode is a non-ohmic conductor.
    • resistance of a diode depends on the direction of the current. current can flow one way but not the other.
