LDR

  • what is a light dependent resistor?

a component that is made from a semi-conducting material, its resistance depends on light level and uses light to free up electrons. its resistance falls when light level increases.
  • light dependent resistors in relation to graphs

light energy is being used to free up electrons which makes it a better conductor as it has less resistance. by the end of the graph, it reaches a point where the light gets so bright that there are no more electrons left to flee.
  • practical uses of LDRs
an ldr could be used to control an outdoor light
if the light level falls, the resistance in the LDR will increase
this could be connected to an electronic switch
increasing resistance = turn it on
decreasing resistance = turn it off
