parallel

Cards (5)

  • circuit conclusions in parallel

more lamps in parallel, same cells, more total current
there are more paths with the same resistance, total current is therefore bigger
adding lamps in parallel has effect of reducing resistance
  • junctions in parallel circuits

total current into junction = total current out from junction
  • potential difference in parallel circuits
potential difference across each component is the same in parallel
  • resistors in parallel

adding more resistors in parallel decreases the total resistance. this is because the total potential difference is the same across each resistor so adding an extra resistor in parallel increases the total current entering the combination because the total resistance is equal to the battery PD / the total current entering combination, the total resistance is less than it was before the extra resistor was added.
  • in parallel, current is shared between branches. therefore the total current going into a junction has to equal the total current leaving it.
