  • The Quran is divided into chapters called Surahs, which are further divided into verses called Ayahs.
  • It is written in Arabic and is considered by Muslims to be the literal word of God.
  • The Quran is the central religious text of Islam, believed by Muslims to be a revelation from God.
  • The Qur’an is believed to be the word of God, which was revealed to Mohammad via the angel Jibril over a period of around 22 years.
  • Other Muslim holy books include the Torah, Psalms, Gospel and the Scrolls of Abraham, which are all believed to be revealed texts of God. However, these are not seen to have the same authority as the Qur’an because they are said to have been changed or distorted.
  • Muslims also use Hadiths – teachings and sayings of Mohammad.

  • Holy Books
    • Torah - Revelations given to Moses by Allah. Not considered to be direct words of Allah. Contains "guidance and light" - Quran
    • Scrolls of Abraham - Ibrahim received these on the first day of Ramadan. They contain parable like stories.
    • Psalms - Prayers and poems by Dawud the great King. "To David we gave the book of the Psalms" - Quran
    • Gospel - Stories of Isa's life and death. Muslims believe may contain mistakes as aren't direct words of Allah.
    • Sunnah and Hadiths - Sayings and teachings of the Prophet Mohammad. Learn how to be good Muslims.
