Social learning theory AO1

Cards (5)

  • Assumptions
Assume that behaviour is learned through experience. Bandura believes we learn by observing and imitating others. We learn indirectly.
  • vicarious reinforcement
Reinforcement which is not directly experienced but occurs indirectly observing someone else being reinforced for a behaviour. They imitate the behaviour of role models.
  • Identification
We are more likely to imitate someone we identify with. This is through similar characteristics and/or higher status
  • In Bandura's Bobo doll study, sixty-six nursery children were divided into three groups. They watched a video of an adult being violent towards a bobo doll. The role model was either rewarded, punished or nothing happened for that behaviour. The children who watched the aggressive model showed more violence overall. Those who saw the model be punished were less likely to imitate. Seeing the same sex model increased the likelihood. Boys imitated more aggressive behaviour overall
  • The full mediational processes are attention, retention, motor reproduction and motivation
