  • the right wing was very resentful and people began joining groups dedicated to overthrowing the republic.
  • they believed ruling politicians lacked legitimacy as they betrayed the father land several times by signing the armistice and treaty. these politicians are labelled as the "November Criminals"
  • the army bore no responsibility for german defeat, and people ignored that Ludendorff had suggested a new civilian army in 1918 when germany were on the verge of defeat. ludendorff and hindenburg promoted the idea of dolchstoss and used it to justify nationalist attacks
  • nationalist movements were appealing to returning soldiers who suffered for a "noble cause" but returned to insults and humiliation. although many soldiers supported the new republic, those who couldn't adjust to civilian life gravitated to right wing groups like the freikorps.
