  • assumptions
    • assumes each person is unique and has their own way of seeing the world. idiographic approach that emphasises the person than focusing on laws that govern behaviour
    • people are self-determining and have free will as they are active agents that determine their own development. behaviour isn't determined by unconscious forces or stimulus-response sequence
    • breaking down behaviour into cnstituent parts result in the whole person being lost
  • congruence
    congruence is your ideal and actual self matching whereas incongruence means a gap between your ideal and actual self
  • what is self actualisation?
    the desire to grow psychologically and fulfil one's potential to become what you are capable of
  • free will
    the notion that humans can make choices on how to behave and are not determined by external factors

  • conditions of worth
    low self esteem and worthlessness result from our parents giving us conditions for their love in childhood. Stop us reaching self-actualisation.

    client-centred therapy that focuses on creating supportive and judgement free environment where individuals can explore their feelings, attitudes and behaviour. Focuses on present problems rather than the past.
