What are examples of obsessive thoughts?
Fear of contamination, fear of harming oneself or others, excessive concern with order or symmetry.
What are compulsion?
Natural response to fighting obsessive thoughts with purposeful mental or physical rituals or behaviours. Attempts to relieve anxiety. Relief only temporary and reinforces the obsession.
What is the difference between overt and covert compulsions?
Worry: contamination. Behaviour: washing hands after touching anything.

Worry: fear of harming someone. Behaviour: arranging objects in a certain way.
What is the diagnostic criteria for OCD in the DSM-5?
Obsessions and/or compulsions present on most days for 2 successive weeks, time-consuming, cause distress or impairment, not due to substance or medical condition.
What are some features of OCD?
1.1-1.8% of the population. More common in those with history of sexual or physical abuse. Genetic element: 1st degree relative 2x as likely to have disorder. Age of onset: late teens/ early 20’s.
