Lies and adultery

• We live in a broadly utilitarian society where telling a lie can be seen as morally right in certain situations
• For Aquinas, lying is a betrayal of reason
• Lying becomes an issue either when we are tempted to lie for our own benefit or when it seems lying would help others 
• What would Aquinas say about lying?

  It conflicts with the synderesis rule and does not allow for an ordered society
• Telling lies is socially destructive
• For Freud there is little or no sense of the conscience treating lying as a moral issue
