  • Edmund de la pole (Earl of Suffolk) was frustrated with henry for refusing to elevate him to a dukedom. His brother was killed in the Simnel rebellion, meaning his family had a history of betrayal.
  • in July 1499, the Earl of Suffolk disappeared and reappeared in Guisnes, causing Henry to fear a foreign-backed invasion, so he persuaded him to return.
  • in 1501, suffolk and his brother went to the court of the holy roman empower, as themselves and the yorkists were safe under maximillian.
  • following the death of Henry's eldest son Arthur in 1502, Henry wanted to show he was a strong and secure leader by eliminating any threat. so he imprisoned all of Suffolk's relatives in England and in January 1504, 51 men were attained that supported Suffolk (the largest number in one action during Henry's reign)
  • henry executed the man who was the governor of Guisnes when Suffolk fled there for disloyalty. Henry also had an effective spy system and had an informant in the suffolk camp.
  • in 1506, Philip of burgundy took refuge at the port of Weymouth because of a storm, so henry accepted the release of Philip of Burgundy in exchange for the earl of suffolk, meaning he used Philip as a bargaining tool due to burgundy being part of the holy roman empire
  • the earl of suffolk was imprisoned in the tower of London and was eventually executed by Henry VIII. yorkists in England now remained loyal to Henry for their own safety
