    Arson was viewed as a crime against authority since land belonged to nobility and the king

    least harsh but acted as a deterrent due to public humiliaton
    • those with this punishment were placed in the middle of the village or town square and would often be given several days in the poor weather
    • public would throw rubbish and waste at them but also verbally abuse them
    • a common crime that resulted in this is public disorder - drunkenness
