truce of ayton

Cards (4)

  • Scotland and England had a historically tense relationship, James IV took Warbeck into his favour in 1495 despite his 1486 treaty with England, and he even gave Warbeck his cousin's hand in marriage.
  • after warbeck's second failed invasion at cornwall, the socttish people resented paying for invasions that would not affect them, and James IV lost faith in Warbeck, so henry began offering a treaty.
  • the truce of Ayton was signed in 1497 but did not become a full peace treaty until Warbeck's execution in 1499. the treaty was the first agreement of its type between the two nations since 1328, and was sealed in august 1503 by the marriage of Henry's daughter Margaret to James.
  • the treaty meant England theoretically no longer had to worry about the security of the northern border, but Scotland still had a historic pact with France, meaning the truce relied on English and french relations. however, this was not a problem whilst Henry was in power
