1.3 The recovery of the Republic, 1924-29

• in August 1923, Ebert (now president) appointed Gustav Stresemann as the new chancellor and foreign secretary
• Stresemann oversaw an economic recovery ans recovery in foreign relations that stabilised the Weimar Republic
• Stresemanns strategy ensured that, by 1929, the Weimar Republic was a more stable state
• Support for extremists fell and by 1918, moderates represented 58% of the Reichstag
• The death of Freidrich Ebert and his replacement by Paul Von Hindenburg gave the Weimar Republic a strong figurehead
• Stresemann died in October 1929
