  • similarities between new right & functionalists view on education 

    • favours the meritocratic system- principles of competition & preparing students to join the workforce
    • Education socialise us into shared values such as national identity
  • however …
    • nee right believes education fails to do those things because it is run by the state
    • One size fits all approach imposes uniformity
    • Parents, pupils & employees have no say = state education unresponsive which leads to a less qualified workplace
  • solutions: marketisation of education. Chubb & Moe consumer choice 

    • competition between schools and empowering consumers leads to schools ability to meet the needs of everyone increases.
    • chubb & Moe: proposes a voucher system where parents shop for a school to give their voucher to. (parentocracy). schools compete to attract customers because the vouchers would be their main source of income
  • 2 roles for the state
    1. state should ensure schools transmit a shared culture eg having a national curriculum
    2. imposing a framework that schools compete in which gives parents more info so they can make an informed choice . eg ofsted inspections, league of table of schools
  • evaluation
    • Bau (1994): competition between schools only benefit the MC as they can access better schools using their cultural and economic capital.
    • real cause of low education standards is lack of funding not state control
    • Marxist argue that there is no shared culture in education, there is a ruling class culture that devalues WC & ethnic minorities
