Shifting resources

• Port was on the west coast of England and so when trading became prominent with Europe, this port was not used
• Deindustrialisation in the 1970s/1980s = containerisation + manufacturing moving abroad as it was cheaper = less dock workers were needed
• Large scale unemployment and discrimination to the Black African Caribbean community = Toxteth riots 1981
• Modern industries clustered towards the south east of England and greenfield sites = limited the potential growth of Toxteth
