  • Raval was an area that was industrialised and polluted, as well as densely populated due to the demand to house factory workers
  • There was previously large textile and brick making factories which contributed a poor environmental quality
  • The large population density was due to large tenement blocks which shared similar conditions to slums
  • South Raval's proximity to the port also meant that there was a large migrant population, who were desperate for funds - consequently, the south became known for prostitution, the informal sector, and drug trafficking
