biological aproach

Cards (6)

  • ao1
the biological approach investigates how biological structures and proceses within the body impacts behaviour. Biological factors like genetics, brain structure, neurochemistry and hormones and evolution. It assumes that mental disorders are inhereted using methods like twin studies by comparing the concordance rates between pairs of twins. It distinguishes between genotype (genetic makeup) and phenotype (observable traits shaped by genetics and the environment).
  • paragraph 2
The brain - cerebellum controls functions like thought memory and sensory processing. Neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine regulate emotions, actions and hormones produced by endocrine glands influence processes like moods and reproduction. Additionally Darwin's theory of evolution like natural selection to explain behaviours that enhances survival and reproduction
  • strength: real life application
for example it has increased understanding of biochemical process in the brain and has led to the development of drugs that treat serious mental illness like depression.
a-these drugs aren't effective for all patients they have revolutionised treatment for many
k-This therefore is a strength because it means that suffers can mange their condition and live a relatively normal life
  • another strength: scientific
the biological aproach uses the experimental method as it's main method is investigation. Experimental studies take place in highly controlled environments so that other researchers can replicate their research in the same environmental conditions
k-This therefore increases the validity of the original findings if they can be reproduced.
  • weakness: deterministic
as it suggests our behaviour is determined by biological causes to which we cannot control. For example the law states that we see offenders as morally and illegally responsible for their actions and
k-therefore if we find that there is a 'criminal' gene this could complicate this principle
  • another weakness is that the biologicaal approach is reductionist
for example many explanations of mental disorders are reductionists because genes or neurochemicals imbalanced are believed to be the main cause of these disorders
k-therefore causes us to lose sight of other possible factors like cognition and culture on behaviour
