    - as favelas survive for longer, they become better established on their own through time, and many of the houses become built of better materials such as brick and tiles. Some grow to have electricity and running water.

    - as the city emerges, the population increases and becomes richer, meaning more people can afford cars. The city hasn't adapted to this change yet, meaning there is a lot of traffic congestion.
  • Education challenges in rio
    Schooling is meant to follow government guidelines, but there is no strict curriculum. Violence can also be a barrier to education, and it is not safe for children to travel to school in some neighborhoods.
  • How has the government tried to stop traffic congestion?
    Invested in public transport - the BRT bus system has its own lane dedicated to the bus system which reduces congestion.
  • How has rio tried to improve education
    The schools of tomorrow programme, which targets 155 schools in the most violent neighborhoods. An online education portal was set up where students could still access assignments set by their teachers online when classes were cancelled due to violence in the city. This decreased the drop out rate in these areas.
