  • Intro - Part 1
    • The First World War from 1914 - 1918 was a brutal conflict which left many soldiers scarred. The Western Front was a key battleground during World War I, extending from the Belgian coast on the North Sea to the Swiss French border. It was distinguished by a continuous line of trenches stretching for approximately 440 miles (700 kilometers).
  • Intro - Part 2
    • The front witnessed some of the war's most violent and continuous fighting, including the Battles of the Somme, Verdun, and Passchendaele. Among the many horrors experienced by soldiers, the conditions in the trenches were particularly bad. The hardships soldiers faced were varied but conditions such as trench foot were one of the most extreme. The mud; created many problems for the troops as they could not keep their feet dry and clean.
  • Intro - part 3
    Other conditions such as shell shock and disease and infection were also significant trench conditions that impacted soldiers' overall wellbeing and specifically their ability to fight. Arguably shell shock is the worst trench condition faced by soldiers on the Western Front therefore challenging the viewpoint.
