Moments

• The principle of moments states that if in equilibrium, the sum of clockwise moments= the sum of anticlockwise moments
• Moment= force x perpendicular distance from pivot
• The units for moments are Nm ( Newton meters )
• Repeatable is measurements are similar when done by the same person/ group with the same apparatus.
• Reproducible is measurements are similar when done by a different person/ group using different apparatus.
• Weight= mass x gravitational field strength
• Levers transmit the turning effect of a force.
• In a lever, if the input and output force are on different sides of the pivot, the forces will act in different directions. (E.g input force is up, output force is down)
• In a lever, if the input and output force are on the same sides of the pivot, the forces will act in the same direction
• In a lever, the output force is generally closer to the pivot than the input force, meaning it is a larger force.
• Gears transmit turning effects.
