Reintegrative Shaming

• Braithwaite 1989 - Positive Role for Labelling Process: 

  Crime rates lower when reintegrative rather than disintegrative shaming is used 
• 1. Disintegrative Shaming: 

  • Offender and crime is labelled as bad and the offender is excluded from society 
• 1. Reintegrative Shaming: 

  • Labels on the act rather than the offender 
  • Avoids stigmatising the offender as evil, whilst condemning the deviant action 
  • Ability to readmit the wrongdoer back to society 
  • Avoids secondary deviance
