Individualdifferences
Strength = research support
Elms and Milgram (1966) using participants from Milgram‘s original shock experiment
Sampleconsisted of 20obedientparticipants who administered the full450volts and 20disobedientparticipants who refused to continue
Completedseveralpersonalityquestionnaires - including Adorno’sFscale
Found obedientparticipantsscoredhigher on the F-scalecompared to disobedientparticipants
Obedientparticipants were also lessclose to their fathersduringchildhood
Limitation = political bias
The F scale only measures the tendency towards an extreme form of right-wing ideology
Christie and Jahoda (1954) argue that the Fscale is a politicallybiasedinterpretation of the authoritarianpersonality as it doesnotconsiderevidencedcases of left-wingauthoritarianism, such as RussianBolshevism
In fact, right-wing and left-wingideologies have a lot in common as they bothemphasise the importance of completeobedience to politicalauthority
It can therefore be said that Adorno’stheory is not a comprehensivedispositionaltheory as it cannotaccount for obedience to authorityacross the wholepoliticalspectrum
Limitation = methodological issues
The authoritarianpersonality is based on flawedmethodology - the use of the F-scale which is a questionnaire
All 30items on the scale are worded in the same‘direction’ which can lead to acquiescencebias, which is the tendency to agree with items on a questionnaireregardless of the content of the questions
As a result, people who agree with the items on the Fscale may notnecessarilydisplay and align with authoritariantraits, they may be merelyacquiescing
This, therefore, reduces the validity of the questionnairemethod used in determining the degree of authoritarianism, suggesting that otherfactors or explanations may be responsible for obedience
Limitation = individual differences
There may be individualdifferences that contribute to the development of the authoritarianpersonality
Middendorp and Meleon (1990) found that workingclass and less-educatedpeople are morelikely than well-educatedpeople to displayauthoritarianpersonalitycharacteristics
If these claims are correct, then it is possible that it is notauthoritarianpersonalitycharacteristicsalone that lead to obedience, but also otherfactors, includinglevels of education and socio-economicstatus
