leaves adapted for photosynthesis

Cards (6)

  • 1 (broad)

leaves are broad so they have a large surface area exposed to light
  • 2 (waxy cuticle)

this acts as a protective layer for leaf+prevents water from evaporating without blocking any sunlight
  • 3 (upper epidermis)

this is transparent which allows light to pass through and reach the palisade mesophyll layer
  • 4 (stomata)

is fund on underside of leaf and allows gas exchange where co2 can diffuse in and oxygen can diffuse out
  • 5 (chloroplasts)

most of chloroplasts are found in the palisade laer as they are near the top + so can access more light
  • 6 (vascular bundles)

these consist of the transport vessels: xylem+phloem which carry water+nutrients around the plant + take away glucose produced by photosynthesis
