  • Thornton
Girls aren't included in subcultures because they marry earlier and earn less than males, males therefore invest more money, time and energy into going out whilst girls focus on school. So girls have less 'subcultural' capital
  • McRobbie and Garber
Bedroom culture: girls stay in their rooms, experiment with makeup and gossip. This is a form of resistance as girl's anxieties about men give them tight friendship groups which give them a private space where they're protected
  • Reddington
Shows how females did play a big part in spectacular subcultures e.g. punks such as Vivienne Westwood. Punks offered an outlet to girls who wanted to resist marriage and college. But some female performers like 'Punkettes' were judged for their appearance more than males
  • Bennett
Neo-tribes are less gendered, so girls can develop their own identities
