Pathetic Fallacy

Cards (5)

  • The play opens with thunder and lightning and the introduction of the witches, signifying how dark and violent the mood is but, also, how dark and unnatural the witches are. This is repeated whenever the witches appear.
  • Banquo states that there are no stars in the sky (2:1) on the night of Duncan's death, signifying evil is at work.
  • Lennox claims the weather was bad the night Duncan was killed (2:3), with "Lamentings heard i'th'air, strange screams of death"
  • Before murdering Banquo, the first murderer notes that it is getting dark. This could signify the soon to be end of Banquo or could symbolise the horrors of Macbeth's reign.
  • At the end of her life, Lady Macbeth is scared of the dark; this could symbolise her understanding of what she has done and how scared she now is of dark forces.
