Metals

Cards (17)

  • Metal + oxygen —> metal oxide
  • Metal + water —> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
  • metal + acid —> metal salt + hydrogen
  • What are metal ores?
Natural occuring compounds from which metals can be extracted
  • What is percentage composition?
The percentage by mass of each element in a compound.
  • What are metals good at conducting?
    Electricity and heat
  • Why are metals good conductors?
    They contain delocalised electrons
  • What is oxidation (think OIL)
    The loss of electrons
  • What is reduction? (think RIG)
    The gain of electrons
  • What is a redox reaction?
Reaction where both oxidation and reduction are taking place
  • What is the electrochemical series?
A measure of how easily a metal forms ions in a solution by losing electrons
  • A metal higher up in the electrochemical series looses electrons easily and readily forms ions in a solution
  • Is the metal strips were magnesium and copper where would the electrons flow to?
The electron would flow to the copper since its lower in the electrochemical series and magnesium ions would form in the electrolyte
  • What is electrolysis?

A process to separate metal ions, a solution or molten is used and electricity is put through two electrodes if separate charges to separate the ions
  • What is the most common method of extractions for potassium oxide to aluminium oxide?
    Electroysis
  • What is the most common method of extraction for zinc oxide to copper oxide?
Heating with carbon or carbon monoxide (blast furnace)
  • What is the most common method of extraction for mercury oxide to gold oxide?
    Heat (alone)
