Required practical : Electrolysis

Cards (7)

  • Put the solution to be tested in a beaker. Add the electrodes and turn on the DC power supply. Observe what happens at the electrodes.
  • Copper chloride - Makes copper at the cathode and chlorine gas at the anode
  • Copper sulfate - makes copper at the cathode and oxygen at the anode
  • Sodium sulfate - makes hydrogen gas at the cathode and oxygen gas at the anode
  • Sodium chloride - makes hydrogen gas at the cathode and oxygen gas at the anode
  • Copper sulfate - copper is less reactive than hydrogen so this is reduced at the cathode
  • Copper sulfate - Cu2 + 2eCu^{Cu^2\ +\ 2e^-\rightarrow Cu}
