Electrolysis

Cards (5)

  • What is electrolytes?

Its when an ionic compound is melted/dissolved in water, the ions are free to move around. These liquids can conduct electricity.
  • Firstly, The ions move to the electrodes when an electrical current is applied.
  • secondly , Anions ( negatively charged ions ) move the anode, they lose electrons and are oxidised.
  • Thirdly, Cations ( positively charged ions ) move to the cathode, they gain electrons and are reduced.
  • Lastly, the ions are discharged at the electrodes. Elements ( no charge ) are formed at the electrodes
