1970s Lebanon

• 1970: PLO expelled from Jordan, so established bases in southern Lebanon, it launched attacks on Israel, resulting in reprisals and Lebanese and PLO fighter deaths
• 1975: Lebanese army tried to regain control of southern Lebanon; mostly Christian, Lebanese Muslims joined PLO, so Civil War began
• War until 1990, with ever-increasing splinter groups of Arab and Christian fighters, while, PLO still attacked Israel, 1978: Israel invaded Lebanon to fight PLO, UN troops sent to maintain order
