  • Sleep is presented in the play as a gift from nature. The ability to sleep well is connected with innocence.
  • Macbeth says that he has "murdered sleep" by killing Duncan. As a result, je and Lady Macbeth are tormented by nightmares. Lady Macbeth can no longer sleep peacefully, enduring countless sleepwalks, which eventually drive her to death. Macbeth himself is physically haunted by his nightmares - seeing Banquo's ghost.
  • Duncan is killed in his sleep, which presents Macbeth as a coward. Duncan was at his most innocent and least protected.
