sandra bem created a psychological test to measure androgyny which is known as the BSRI, Bem sex role inventory
BSRI- test includes 20 feminine traits, 20 masculine traits and 20 neutral items (distracters), when completing the inventory, an individu dal must rate themselves on each trait on a scale of 1-7 where 1 is never true, 7 is almost always true, the scores for masculine and feminine traits are added up and a mean score is calculated. if both means scores are above 4.9 this means you are androgynous.
Bem (1977) describes four broad personality types that are captured by the Bem sex-role inventory:
Masculine: High masculinity and low femininity
Feminine: High femininity and low masculinity
Androgynous: High masculinity and high femininity
Undifferentiated: Low masculinity and low femininity
Bem argues that androgyny – scoring highly for both masculinity and femininity – is psychologically healthy and advantageous. One reason androgyny may be advantageous is that having a mix of masculine and feminine traits enables a person to adapt and excel in more situations, whereas a person who scores highly one way but not the other is likely to have a more limited skillset.
