  • structure of the police - traffic police
These officers are highly trained in advanced driving technique and are allowed to drive at speeds well above the limit in pursuit of an offender. Their job is to patrol the roads and motorways, and to stop anyone breaking the law (such as dangerous driving; driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs; using a mobile phone whilst driving and speeding) For example, Police Scotland issued over 600 fines during the festive period in December 2021.
  • structure of the police - community police
There role is to maintain a visible presence in local communities (to reassure the public and deter criminals). They can also work with local schools to educate pupils about the consequences of crime (sometimes called ‘campus cops’) For example, Garnock Community Campus has a campus police officer called PC Duffy who has given talks to pupils about the consequences of crime.
  • structure of the police - CID
It is their job to investigate any serious crimes such as murders, rapes and drugs crimes. They will interview the suspect and also search any vehicles and premises linked to them in order to find evidence. For example, officers in CID may specialise in areas such as counter-terrorism or domestic abuse.
