Distillation

Cards (5)

  • Distillation- a process that uses evaporation followed by condensation to separate a solvent from a solution

    3. Liebig condenser
    4. beaker
    5. Water
    6. Bunsen Burner
    7. Round bottom flask
    8. Water in
  • How does distillation work?
It works because the parts of the mixture have different boiling points.
    • The mixture is heated and the substance with the lowest boiling point will evaporate first , this substance then enters the condenser where it is cooled and condensed and is collected in a beaker
    • The pure liquid collected is called the distillate.
    • Fractional Distillation can be used to separate a mixture or two more miscible (mixable) liquids.
    • The fractionating column improves separation of the mixture , it separates different components as they have different boiling points , where each different substance is called a fraction
  • What is simple distillation?
    • A process of purifying a liquid compound by heating it into a vapour that is then condensed back into a liquid, is a separation technique to separate a soluble solute from a solvent
  • Distillation is a separation technique used to separate a soluble solute from a solvent
