Racism in Wider Society

Cards (5)

  • Racism
Prejudice or discrimination against a person or people on the basis of their racial or ethnic group, typically towards a minority or one that is marginalised.
  •  Rex's study on Racism in the Housing Market:
Rex argues that discrimination in the housing market disproportionately impacts ethnic minorities, forcing them into poorer quality housing compared to white individuals of the same class. These houses:
Are often overcrowded, hindering activities like homework and sleep.
Contain issues such as damp, leading to poor health and school absences.
  • Case Study – Awaab Ishak:
Awaab Ishak, a toddler, died from a respiratory condition caused by mould in his family's council house. Despite raising concerns with the council, no action was taken.
The family attributed the neglect to systemic racism, as they were new to the UK and unfamiliar with its systems. This case highlights the severe consequences of unequal treatment in housing.
  • Racism in the Employment Market:
Wood et al. found deliberate racial discrimination in employment. In their study, 3 closely matched job applications were sent to 1,000 vacancies using names linked to different ethnic groups.
1 in 16 'ethnic minority' applicants received interview offers, compared to 1 in 9 'white' applicants.
This discrimination leads to higher unemployment and low pay for ethnic minorities, negatively impacting their children's education and motivation. Students may feel there is no point in trying if they expect similar discrimination when seeking work.
  • Improvements (。・∀・)ノ゙:
    • The Equal Opportunities Act and Equality Act made 'ethnicity' a protected characteristic, making it illegal to discriminate against someone based on their ethnicity.
    • Protests and campaigns aim to reduce racism in wider society, such as Black Lives Matter, which has helped to educate individuals on the matter of racism.
BUT: It has not been fully eliminated.
