Inherited diseases

Cards (8)

  • During IVF, it’s possible to remove a cell from each embryo and analyse its gene before being implanted, many genetic disorders can be detected like cystic fibrosis, a long with being allowed to get DNA from an embryo in the womb and test that fr disorders
  • embryonic screening is quite controversial because of the decisions it can lead to
  • embryo in the womb, screening can lead to the decision to terminate the pregnancy, while embryos produced by the IVF could destroy the ‘bad’ alleles
  • FOR EMBRYONIC SCREENING
    help people stop suffering
Relating disorders cost a lot of money
Laws stop it going too far
  • AGAINST EMBRYONIC SCREENING
implies people with genetic problems are ‘undesirable’
could cause people selecting the most ‘desirable’ child e.g blue eye blonde hair and smart
    screening is expensive
  • cytsic fibrosis is a genetic disorder of the cell membranes resulting in the produce of thick, sticky mucus in the air passages and pancrease
  • the allele which causes cystic fibrosis is a recessive allele 'f' carried by 1 out of 25 people but because it is recessive people with only 1 copy of the allele won't have the disorder, they are carriers
  • polydactyly is when a baby is born with extra fingers or toes and is caused by a dominant allele 'D' so can be inherited if just 1 parent carries the defective allele
