  • The function that the family performs depends on the society in which it is found, due to new social institutions, e.g. schools, taking over the role of the family. Family types have changed from extended to nuclear
  • Pre-Industrial Society = Extended Family
    • The family was entirely responsible for the education, production of foods and caring for the sick
    • Unit of production
    • Self-Sufficient Unit - Providing for its' members health and welfare
  • Modern Society = The Nuclear Family
    • The nuclear fits the complex industrial society
    • Performs a reduced number of functions, due to institutions taking responsibility
  • Geographically Mobile Workforce
    • Pre-Industrial Society - People often spent their whole lives living in the same village
    • In the modern society, industries constantly spring up in different parts of the country, requiring people to move (Nuclear Family)
  • Socially Mobile Workforce
    • Modern Industrial society is constantly evolving due to technology, requires a competent workforce
    • Individual's status is achieved by their own efforts and ability
    • The nuclear family is better equipped to the needs of the industrial society
  • Irreducible Functions 1 - Primary Socialisation of Children
    • To equip with the basic skills and society’s value to enable them to cooperate with others and integrate into society
  • Irreducible Function 2 - Stabilisation of Adult Personalities
The family is where adults can relax and return to their place of work, relaxed and refreshed. This is functional for the efficiency of the economy
