BRAIN AS A WHOLE

Cards (11)

  • there are three parts to the brain the hind brain midbrian and forebrain
  • the hindbrain consists of the brian stem medulla pons and cerebllum
  • the brian stems connects other parts of the brain to the spinal cord which then transmits sensory-motor information between the body and the brain
  • The medulla relays information to and from the spinal cord and is incharge of vital functions such as respiration and swallowing
  • The pons relays information from the medulla, and transmits informationbetween the cerebellum and other parts of the brain. It controls sleep andarousal
  • the cerebellum plays many roles such as classical conditioning motor control and co-ordination and language production
  • The midbrain is associated with vision, hearing, motor control, sleep and wakefulness, arousal (alertness), and temperature regulatio
  • the midbrain contains two main structures the tegentum and tectum
  • The tegmentum contains smaller structures which have important roles in the motor system. It also contains the reticular formation which regulates arousal, attention and sleep
  • The tectum contains the superior colliculi and inferior colliculi which plays a role in reflectiveresponses to sudden visual (superior) and auditory (inferior) changes in the environment
  • the forebrain consists of six different areas the thalamus hypothalamus pituary gland the basal ganglia the limbic system and teh cerebral cortex/neocortex
