    • Those who chose not to return home to be compensated for lost land/property
    • Demilitarise Jerusalem and secure access for all to holy places.
  • Resolution 377
Also known as 'Uniting for peace'
    • Enabled General Assembly to call emergency meetings if requested by 7 members
    • Made collective action easier/more achievable
  • Resolution 242
Security council began work on it in Summer of 1967.
    Passed in November 1967
    • Israeli forces to withdraw from territory they had taken in recent conflicts
    • All states in the region to accept each other's borders, territory, independence, and right to live in peace
    • There should be a 'just' settlement of the refugee problem.
  • Resolution 340
Called for an end to the Yom Kippur war, passed on 25 October 1973.
    Demanded Israeli Ceasefire.
    • Israel did end up stopping fighting, however this was more due to the influence of Henry Kissinger than the Resolution itself as Israel were very ignorant of the UN.
Also established a second emergency force: UNEF 2, which played an important role in supervising and monitoring the disengagement agreements of 1974 and during its 6 year development there was no further war between Israel and Arab nations - positive.
  • Resolution 425
Passed by Security council on March 19 1978
(try and settle the problem of Civil War in Lebanon).
    • This Resolution required Israel to withdraw whilst also respecting Israel's independence.
    • It was broken by Israel in 1982 however, when they invaded Lebanon again on the 6th June.
  • Resolution 426
Passed by Security Council at the same time as Resolution 425
(March 19, 1978) to try and end the issue in Lebanon.
This resolution established UNIFIL (UN Interim Forces In Lebanon)
    Its aims were to:
    • Confirm withdrawal of Israeli forces
    • Restore international peace + security
    • Help Lebanese government restore power
Israel also ignored UNIFIL and so Resolution 426 was also not very effective at its aims as the problem remained unresolved.
  • Resolution 660
Issued by Security council in August 1990 after Iraq attacked Kuwait.
This was a clear act of aggression by Saddam Hussein and the resolution stated Iraq must withdraw immediately.
  • Resolution 678
Subsequent to Resolution 660, Iraq continued to occupy Kuwait and so this resolution brought consequences for Iraq if they did not withdraw in order to make them more likely to do so.
This resolution was issued on 29 November 1990 and it stated:
    • Member states allowed to attack Iraq if it did not withdraw from Kuwait by 15 January 1991.
    • Iraq still did not follow orders to withdraw however, and the disobeying of Resolution 678 by Iraq led to Operation Dessert Storm.
  • Resolution 688
Recognised very soon after Resolution 678
    Broke new ground in 1991
    • Saw Human rights abuse as a threat to international peace and security rather than simply a domestic matter
  • Resolution 1483
Introduced subsequent to the Second Gulf War of 2003
UN had been accused of being weak, and damaging Iraqi people by imposing sanctions, rather than making their government comply.
Introduced Resolution 1483 to attempt to reverse some of this damage.
    • Established the USA + Britain as occupying powers in Iraq
    • Lifted sanctions placed on Iraq
    • Appointed a special representative to oversee the rebuilding of Iraq
