Resolution 242 aimed to achieve permanent peace in the region.
Palestinians rejected it because it did not give them back land that they had before the formation of Israel, or their homeland promised after the 1948 conflict.

Syria rejected it:

Nasser (Egypt) said he would only accept Resolution 242 if Israel withdrew from the territories it took.
