  • diegetic sound = sound that originates from the film's world, like dialogue, footsteps, or radio music that characters can hear
  • non-diegetic sound = sound outside the film's world, such as the musical score or narration not heard by the characters
  • sound bridge = a type of sound that carries over from one scene to another, smoothing the transition
  • voiceover = narration that provides context or commentary, often by a character or an omniscient narrator, heard over the visuals
  • ambient sound = background sounds that create a sense of place, like city noises or nature sounds
