• 1951 - Stalin orders arrest of mingrelian division of communist party - accused of being involved in mingrelian nationalist plot

  • Alot of those arrested had a connection to Beria ( head of the NKVD )
• Beria was forced to carry out the arrests - make him feel uneasy about his position
