Cards (9)

  • what is a natural event
    • natural thing which occurs but doesn't endanger human life or property
    • naturally occurring
  • what is an atmospheric hazard
    • created in the atmosphere by the movement of AIR and WATER
    • eg tornado, hurricane etc
  • what is a tecnonic hazard
    • created by the movement of the earth's tectonic plates
    • eg earthquake, volcano, tsunami etc
  • what is oceanic crust
    • newer - less than 200ma old
    • more dense
    • can sink
    • can be renewed/destroyed
  • what is continental crust
    • older - more than 1500 ma
    • less dense
    • can't sink
    • cant be renewed or destroyed
  • what are factors affecting hazard risks
    • level of development
    • magnitude
    • location
    • population
  • how does level of dev impact hazard risk
    • prediction, preperation - cities such as Tokyo plan and approve buildings which are protected for earthquakes ie they must be able to sway. You can also track and warn those affected
    • governance - police and army can help and reduce chaos
    • poverty - can't afford equipment or plan to protect against hazard
  • how does magnitude affect hazard risk
    • area impacted - dependant on magnitude
    • size and strength - how frequent and magnitude
  • how does location affect hazard risk
    • relief - sea level will be more impacted by tsunami than mountains
    • vegetation - may effect accesibility ie tpr
    • CLIMATE CHANGE - more heat and rain can give a tropical storm more energy and therefore increase size and strength and frequency
