  • what is sexual selection?
Darwin's theory that entails the selection of those characteristics that aid in successful reproduction
  • what is anisogamy and its consequences?
    the difference between gametes.
there is no shortage of fertile males but fertile females are a much rarer ''resource''
it gives rise to 2 types of sexual selection
  • what is inter-sexual selection?
the preferred strategy of the female, the strategies that males use to select females, and vice versa, quality over quantity. Trivers (1972) says women make a greater investment of time, commitment, and other resources before, during, and after the birth of their offspring. the consequences of choosing the wrong partner is more costly for women so the optimum mating strategy is to choose a partner with more genetic fitness and the ability to provide resources
  • what is Fisher's hypothesis
the sexy sons hypothesis (1930) the genes we see today are a result of reproductive success a female who mates with a male who has a particular characteristic will have sons that inherit this trait
  • what is intrasexual selection?
the preferred method of males, the strategy between them that indicates which of the males will be selected as the winner gets his genes carried on. this has given rise to dimorphism, males and females look very different. there's no competition of females for reproductive rights so there's no advantage for larger females differing for large males
