Arguments Against Sentencing Young People

Cards (5)

  • Too many reoffending - 73% released reoffend within a year - not seen as effective to sentence
  • Lots of money is spent on youth offender institutes (detentions) which don't often work and are not always that beneficial
  • Average cost for a place in youth custody is roughly £100,000 per year, but can't be more than £200,000 per year.
  • Need education/training to go back to school/college or find part time employment but many lack basic skills
  • The number of young people entering the system and in custody is decreasing. However the most prolific (dangerous) adult offenders commit their first crimes at an early age. Perhaps they need education instead of a sentence.
