  • How they work
    • Sedation effect - histamine receptors affected, calms anxious patients
    • Dopamine antagonists e.g. Chlorpromazine have been around since the 1950s
    • Reduce action of dopamine - strongly associated with the dopamine hypothesis
    • Block dopamine receptors in synapse, initially dopamine levels increase after taking Chlorpromazine, then production is reduced
    • Normalises neurotransmission, reducing symptoms like hallucinations
