  • 6 in 10 (61%) people perceived crime in the country have risen over the past few years
  • 32% people perceived that crime had risen in their local area
  • 67% believed that news programmes and the radio were influencing people's ideas on national crime levels
  • 54% believed that word of mouth was what influenced the impressions of local crime rates
  • 12% adults worries a lot about violent crime
  • 11% adults worried a lot about burglary
  • 7% adults worried a lot about car crime
  • 19% adults thought that it was likely that they would be a victim of crime within the next 12 months
  • Those who had been a victim in the last year were more likely than non-victims to:
    • look at how local and national crime rates have risen over the last few years
    • worry a lot about crime
    • think that it is more likely to be a victim to another crime in the year ahead
