  • A hydrophyte is a plant that live in water. Hydrophytes have early access to water but are faced with other issues like getting access to oxygen to their submerged tissues and keeping afloat.
  • A water lily has many large air spaces in the leaves, this keeps the leaves afloat so that they they air in the air and can absorb sunlight.
  • A water lily has it's stomata are on the upper epidermis, so that they are exposed to the air to allow gas exchanege.
  • The leaf stem of a water lily has many large air spaces, this helps with buoyancy but also allows oxygen to diffuse quickly to the roots for aerobic respiration.
