Anions

Cards (7)

  • What is an anion?
    A negatively charged ion.
  • How do you test for carbonate ions?
    1. Add dilute HCl
    2. If carbonate ions are present it will produce CO2 gas.
    3. Collect gas and bubble trough limewater
    4. If turns cloudy is a positive test resulting meaning carbonate ions are present.
  • How do you test for sulfate ions?
    1. Dilute HCl to remove any impurities like carbonate ions
    2. Add barium chloride solution
    3. If sulfate ions are present a white precipitate of barium sulfate will form
  • How do you test for halide ions?
    1. Nitric acid added to remove any impurities such as carbonate or sulfate ions.
    2. Add silver nitrate solution.
    3. White precipitate = chloride ions
    4. Cream precipitate= bromide ions
    5. Yellow precipitate = iodide ions
  • When testing for halides what colour precipitate does chloride form?
    White
  • When testing for halides what colour precipitate does bromide form?
    Cream
  • When testing for halides what colour precipitate does iodide form?
    Yellow
