  • modernist state requires educated populace
    • school’s doubled in first decade of reign
    • nearly 1 million pupils in attendance
    • 8000 to 25k schools by 1878
  • secondary schools for all classes
    • schools taught broader subjects such as stem which causes critical thinking and diverts power from church and state
  • Higher education is reformed
    • Universitys could govern themselves sin all aspects
    • By 1899 there wree 16000 students - quadrupled
    • Women could attend byt not get degrees
    • Liberal left wing professors appointed
  • consequences :
    • primary school educated the masses = later problems
    • higher education fosters critical thinking = students are importantly
    • state fundign was minimal so student collectivised for food banks and to discuss bad conditions - therfore study circles of radical thinking and led yo protests
